Novavax gets emergency approval from CDC
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday granted emergency use authorization of the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine for adults who have not had their primary COVID-19 vaccine series.
The two-dose vaccine uses a more familiar protein-based technology, which relies on protein subunits or harmless proteins of the virus that causes COVID-19 to stimulate the immune system. Protein-based vaccines have been used in the U.S. for more than 30 years, according to the CDC.
“If you have been waiting for a COVID-19 vaccine built on a different technology than those previously available, now is the time to join the millions of Americans who have been vaccinated,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Tuesday. “With COVID-19 cases on the rise across parts of the country, vaccination is critical to help protect against the complications of severe COVID-19 disease.”
The Ohio Department of Health may begin ordering Novavax vaccines on Monday, but a spokesperson for the agency said it is unlikely the vaccines will be available for distribution to local health departments and pharmacies until August.
Forty-seven percent of Allen County residents have started their vaccines since the vaccination effort started last winter, according to ODH.
