Shawnee powers past Wapakoneta in three sets

WAPAKONETA – Whenever a game is played to one team’s strength, it usually results in a positive out- come for that team.

Shawnee flashed their strength, power hitting plus a strong net game, as they went to Wapakoneta and knocked off the Redskins 3-0 on games scores of 25-18, 25-10, and 25-23 in Western Buckeye League action.

The first game was tied at 5-5 before the Indians ran out to an 11-5 lead thanks to the serves of Kelly Fischbach. That lead would grow to 22-11 when the Redskins suddenly scored six straight points on the serves of Katie Klopfenstein and the kills and blocks of Sarah Pothast. But the Indians would recover and close out the first game with a 25-18 win.

The second game was more of the same as Shawnee dominated at the net and rode big games from Hailey Manuel, Norah Painter and Amber Greeley at the net as they raced out to leads of 9-3 and 18-8 before closing out the Redskins by a final score of 25-10.

But give credit to Wapakoneta for never giving up as they recovered from a third game deficit of 21-14 to tie the game up at 21-21 on the serves of Mackenzie Lange. The Redskins would go ahead 23-22 before the Indians regained their composure and closed out the game, and the match, with a 25-23 win.

The Indians (5-1, 2-0 WBL) got big nights from Painter who finished with 13 kills and Manuel, who totaled eight kills and four blocks. Kelly Armentrout chipped in with seven kills while libero Jaden Addis had 14 digs and 3 aces.

Trinity Gearing had three blocks while Amanda Medsker totaled 8 digs and 5 aces. Emily Allen had 18 assists while Fischbach finished the contest with 15 assists.

“I am very happy with where we are at as a team; we are very strong at the net.” Shawnee coach Amy Knight said. “We have good senior leadership and the sophomores are learning quickly. These girls almost coach themselves.”

Sarah Pothast paced the Redskins (5-2, 1-1 WBL) with three kills and six blocks. Libero Alexa Lambert had nine digs while Mackenzie Lange finished with nine assists.

“I thought we were back on our heels the first two games before we competed in that third game,” Wapakoneta coach Kim Selvey said. “They are a great team with some real power hitters; we just have to get better.”
