Lima woman faces numerous charges after rough night

LIMA — A Lima woman faces a host of charges — ranging from operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated to aggravated vehicular assault — following a series of incidents that began shortly before midnight Thursday.

According to a spokesman for the Lima Police Department, 53-year-old Christine Simpson, of Lima, was intoxicated in her vehicle in the parking lot of the Cameo bar, 520 N. Jackson St., when she intentionally struck Douglas Helton, 53, of Lima, with her vehicle.

Helton was transported by the Bath Township Fire and Rescue to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Meanwhile, Simpson fled the scene and was subsequently involved in another traffic mishap on North Jefferson Street, north of O’Connor Avenue. Police say Simpson drove left of center and sideswiped a vehicle driven by David Sayre, 25, of Lima.

Once again, Simpson fled the scene — with Sayre in pursuit. She drove to a residence at 715 Williams St. and Sayre contacted police about her whereabouts. Officers were dispatched to the home.

They were met there by Helton, who by now had left the hospital. He and Simpson are acquaintances, police said.

Officers attempted to get Simpson to answer the door at the Williams Street address, but she did not respond. Fearing she may be injured as the result of the traffic accident in which she had been involved earlier, officers broke into the home. According to the police spokesman, Simpson was found “intoxicated, but not injured.”

She was jailed on two counts of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, failure to stop after a traffic accident, reckless operation, driving left of center and aggravated vehicular assault.
