Real Wheels: One historic hearse

LIMA — Chiles-Laman Funeral Home owns this 1938 LaSalle Hearse. It has owned it since 1959. Bob Laman brought it to the Westgate Charity Car Show.

The funeral home donated it to the Allen County Museum. It was given back to the funeral home approximately 20 years ago, and the funeral home had it restored. At one point it was restored with the original mohair upholstery, and then the moths ate the upholstery. It was re-done after that, not with mohair though.

The hearse features hand-carved oak draperies. The National Funeral Home Museum has a 1939 Hearse, and it has replaced the draperies with plastic curtains.

The hearse is used in services and also in parades. When it is driven in parades, there are three women that always sing the Addams Family song when the hearse goes by.
