Fort Jennings blanks Ottoville in baseball

OTTOVILLE — Ft. Jennings’ Derek Luersman tossed a complete-game three hit shutout. The Musketeer hurler fanned six and walked one. Offensively, Aaron Sealts was 1 for 4 with 2 RBI and Brandon Wheri was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Nolan Grote was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Kyle Norbeck was 2 for 4 with one double. For Ottoville, Nick Moorman pitched five innings and gave up seven hits and four earned runs while striking out three and walking three. At the plate, Troy Warnecke and Clayton Schnipke each had hits.

Ada 14, Ottoville 0

OTTOVILLE — Ada hurler Leona Dalton pitched a five-inning shutout. The Bulldog hurler gave up four hits and five strikeouts while walking none. Dalton helped her cause at the plate by going 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI. Olivia Alexander went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI and two runs scored and Nicki Lehstan was 1 for 1 with two runs and one RBI. Teara Coulson was 1 for two with 2 RBI and one run scored. For Ottoville, Olivia Gamble was for 1 for 2 and Peyton Wannemacher was 2 for 2.

ONU sweeps

WOOSTER — The Ohio Northern softball team swept Wooster 5-0, 5-0 and moved its winning streak to five straight games on Wednesday afternoon at Galpin Park.

The Polar Bears improve to 15-3 overall, while the Scots drop to 7-11.

Senior Kirsten Lightel (Tallmadge) and junior Kaitlin Surdej (Lancaster/Central) each pitched complete game victories for ONU in the pitchers circle.

Lightel moves to 8-1 on the season, while Surdej is now 7-2.

Senior Jenna Hollar (Lima/Bath) was a combined 4-for-8 in the two contests and added two runs and a stolen base.

Sophomore Alicia Swierz (Deerfield/Southeast) was 3-for-4 from the plate and added two runs and two RBI for ONU.

In the first contest, ONU used a 4-run second inning to take control of the contest. Senior Hailee Loughman (Brookville), and sophomores Brady Guest (Convoy/Crestview), Mallory Taylor (Olmsted Falls) and Jordan Cloonan (Kirtland/Cornerstone Christian) all scored in the inning.

Sophomore Gabby Stewart (Union, Ky./St. Henry) would drive Swierz home in the top of the fifth inning to help ONU seal the victory.

After three scoreless innings to begin game two, Northern broke the game open with a single from Guest in the top of the fourth inning to score Hollar.

In the top of the fifth inning an RBI double from Swierz scored sophomore Lexie Hess (Mount Vernon) before Swierz scored on a groundout later in the inning.

An RBI double from Stewart in the top of the seventh inning would put the exclamation on the two victories as ONU went on to win game two, 5-0.

Baseball

ONU wins

ADA — Junior Austin Frey (Peoria, Az./Sunrise Mountain) and a solid effort from the Northern defense led the Ohio Northern baseball team to a 4-2 victory over area-rival Defiance on Wednesday afternoon during an overcast and damp day at Wander Field.

With their second straight victory, the Polar Bears move to 12-6 overall, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 6-7.

Frey went seven innings and struck out four batters before sophomore Scott Beaton (Novi, Mich.) and senior T.J. Storer (Loveland/Moeller) combined to close the door. Storer earned his seventh save of the season in the victory.

Offensively, senior Brandon Kasberg (Mentor) was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore Phil Buckingham (Wayne/Elmwood) was also 2-for-3.
