Jury convicts Lima man on charges of burglary, abduction

LIMA — Jurors deliberated for less than 90 minutes Tuesday afternoon in Allen County Common Pleas Court before returning guilty verdicts on four felony counts against a Lima man.

Deandre Baskin, 46, was convicted on charges of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; abduction, a felony of the third-degree; domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony, and violating a protection order, a felony of the fifth degree.

According to court documents, Tavionna Hall, Baskin’s former girlfriend and the mother of one of his children, returned from work to her home at 824 N. Metcalf St., Lima, on the evening of Dec. 3.

After feeding her children, Hall reportedly went upstairs and found a closet door closed — which she told police was out of the ordinary. As she went to examine the closet, Baskin reportedly opened the closet door and struck her in the eye. A scuffle continued, and Hall suffered a cut on her leg. She told her attacker she needed to go to the store to get bandages, and he accompanied her to a nearby Dollar Tree store. As they returned to Hall’s vehicle, Hall sped away and contacted police.

Baskin, who had an active protective order against him and was on post-release control from jail at the time of the incident, was subsequently apprehended by police. He at first denied he had been at the Metcalf Street home but later admitted to investigators that he was at the residence, according to court documents.

The jurors’ verdict came late Tuesday after two days of testimony in the trial. Baskin will be sentenced April 18.
