Bowling: Postseason produces surprises

This past Saturday at 20th Century Lanes the OHSAA Division I sectional tournament for boys and girls was held at 20th Century Lanes.

The West Ohio High School Bowling Conference and Western Buckeye League were well represented with Celina, Shawnee and Wapak moving on as teams to district play and Lima Senior’s Morgan Twining and Marcus McGee gaining individual spots.

Star Lanes in Port Clinton will be the next stop for those who advanced. The competition that will take place at Saturday noon over the rigid but playable Abbey Road Kegel pattern.

While six teams will be making the trip to Port Clinton, two boys squads and one girls squad, as well as two individual boys and one individual girl will take that final step to Columbus with the Wapak girls and the Celina and Shawnee boys being among the favorites.

The OHSAA Division II District was held at Interstate Lanes in Rossford this past week with at least one stunning result.

As expected, the Coldwater girls are Columbus bound but most on the school’s boys team will be staying home. This does not normally happen. The Cavaliers’ Caden Seitz and Evan Diller advanced as individuals.

Eastwood, St. Henry and St. Marys boys teams will be representing the Lima area in Columbus and if comparison scores mean anything, Eastwood coach Jay Young has his team prepared for battle.

Coldwater, St. Henry and St. Marys have battled in conference action all season so it is not a surprise that at least two of the three are representing the northwest in the state finale.

St. Henry was the runner-up to Coldwater in year one of the event and his been there on multiple occasions. St. Marys is the defending state champion and at times has even looked better than last season. It should be one really great afternoon in Columbus. It would be great to see one bring home the gold.

Play begins at 10:30 a.m. at Wayne Webb Columbus Bowl but it would be wise to get there a lot earlier like when the doors open at 8:30 a.m. The same would hold true for Saturday when the girls take to the lanes.

Bryana Twining from Bath, which finished fifth as district, will represent the Wildkittens in individual play as well as Van Wert’s Lorrie Decker.

It was an honor to serve the Northwest District and to serve the Riepenhoff family at 20th Century during the sectional. The face to face praise that was given was very much appreciated as well as that which was demonstrated in social media and other sources.

It can be said that the success of the event can be summed up in four words, Don and Madalyn Riepenhoff. They did an amazing job in raising Chris, Jim and Michael. In each case they instilled in them the importance of the work ethic that if they were going to do something that it needed to be done completely.

The spirit of Madalyn was very present in the house as the focus stayed on the youth that were rolling and the importance of the teams being served at all cost.

It was also key that many have stayed loyal to the tradition of the family and stepped forward to help out as needed.
