Mendon employee dies in workplace accident

MENDON — An employee in the northern Mercer County village of Mendon died Thursday in a work-related accident.

According to Capt. Martin Emerine of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the Mendon utility department, 340 E. Market St., shortly before noon Thursday as the result of a 911 call reporting a man had become stuck in an auger.

Through their investigation, deputies learned that Brendan Poling, 49, an employee for the village and resident of rural Mendon, had climbed inside the bed of a dump truck carrying salt. It is believed Poling slipped and became entangled in the salt auger, where he was later discovered by another village employee.

Poling was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

Poling was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and graduated from Lincolnview High School, according to his obituary. He was good at fixing things around the house, making automotive repairs and building things, according to his family. He enjoyed fishing and camping, and he was a die-fan of the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Salem United Presbyterian Church, Venedocia. Visitation is 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, Delphos, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Mendon Fire Department and Celina EMS.
