SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP – Wayne Trace has eight Sinn girls on the roster.
But one clearly stood out from the rest on Monday. Wayne Trace sophomore guard Claire Sinn scored 23 points and was 5 of 5 on 3- pointers to power the Raiders over Shawnee 56-34 in a girls basketball game Monday at Shawnee High School.
Sinn also had seven rebounds and hit 9 of 12 from the field.
Wayne Trace ended up 7 of 10 on 3-pointers for the night. It continually penetrated the lane and kicked the ball to the 3-point line.
“That’s kind of what we’ve been doing,” Wayne Trace coach Bethany DeJarnet said. “We graduated our height so we put up a lot of shots during the summer to hope to get into a rhythm. We knew we would have to beat them with our speed and outside shooting.
“She (Claire Sinn) did a very good job of pressuring the ball and anticipating what was happening on defense. She’s played a lot of basketball, so she knows the game and has a pretty high basketball I.Q.’’
Sadie Sinn had 14 points and five rebounds for Wayne Trace.
Shawnee is 7-6. Wayne Trace is 8-2.
Alissa Stahler had 13 points and five rebounds for Shawnee.
Shawnee’s Trinity Gearing, a 6-foot-1 sophomore, had three points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Eliyana Floyd had eight points. Ijah Austin had seven rebounds.
Shawnee is playing the rest of the year without its point guard Grace O’Connor, who is out with after undergoing shoulder surgery.
The first half looked a lot like a 3-point shooting contest.
Wayne Trace was 5 of 5 on 3-pointers, while Shawnee was only 2 of 16.
There are three groups of Sinn sisters on the Raiders’ roster and all are related to the others as cousins.
But it was clearly Claire Sinn’s night, as she ran the floor, penetrated the lane, drilled threes and played heady defense.
Claire Sinn was 3 of 3 on 3-pointers in the first half for 14 points.
“We didn’t do a very good job of locating her,” Shawnee coach Jeff Heistan said. “That might be the understatement of the game. … We did that (went man) after she hit her third, but we didn’t respond quick enough. We weren’t playing great defense on her.’’
That helped the Raiders lead 16-10 after the first quarter. Wayne Trace knocked in three straight 3-pointers early in the second quarter, with Gracie Gudakunst hitting one and Claire Sinn hitting two over the Shawnee2-3 zone.
After Sinn’s second straight 3-pointer, her third for the game, Shawnee went man and put Stahler on Claire Sinn. But by then it was 25-13 Wayne Trace.
The Raiders led 29-17 at the half.
“They had no interest in scoring in the paint,” Heistan said. “They just wanted to penetrate and pass out. And we fell for it every time.’’
Wayne Trace started the third quarter on an 11-5 run. Claire Sinn’s 3-pointer capped the run and made it 40-22 at the 2:52 mark of the third.
Wayne Trace won the boards 36-33.
Wayne Trace shot 50 percent from the field.
Shawnee hit only 22 percent from the field and was 4 of 26 on 3-pointers.
“We didn’t execute together and played very poor in the paint,” Heistan said.
