Charity Car Show gives away $6,500

LIMA — The $6,500 given away to seven different charitable organizations Wednesday will all stay local and help needy people or good programs in the community.

The Charity Car Show raised the money through its annual car show held June 26 at the Lima Auto Mall. There were more than 325 cars participating with a $10 per car entry fee, said Andy Maravola, an organizer for the event.

Another $1,000 will be set aside for the local Adopt-a-Family program to help needy families at Christmas, said Melissa Waller, treasurer for the show.

Organizers also sold raffle tickets for prizes and auctioned off items to raise money, Waller said.

Waller said organizers wanted the money to stay local and help people in the community which is how the local charities were chosen.

More than 2,000 people visited the show, which was free to the public, Maravola said.

Organizations receiving money included Veterans Food Pantry ($1,500), Samaritan House ($1,500), Westgate Lanes Christmas Fund ($1,500), Christian Corner Community Center ($500), Church United Pantry ($500), Cops for Kids ($500) and DARE ($500).

Phil Harpest, of the Christian Corner Community Center, said he was very grateful for the donation. The center serves more than 1,000 meals each month.

“We’re a community center and soup kitchen on McClain Road. We feed people three days a week lunch and breakfast,” Harpest said.

Sheriff Sam Crish said the donations for DARE and Cops for Kids shopping program at Christmas will go a long way.

“These are great programs for the kids,” he said.
