LIMA — The Lima Public Library is looking for someone to teach technology classes after being selected by the State Library of Ohio to participate in the Guiding Ohio Online/AmeriCorps program.
The national service program is similar to the Peace Corps. It was developed by the State Library of Ohio to support public libraries’ efforts to teach patrons to find, understand and use vital online resources and services. It is funded by a grant from ServeOhio, Ohio’s commission on service and volunteerism.
The person being sought for the position would be a volunteer who would receive a stipend for his or her services. AmeriCorps workers are also eligible to receive an education award that can be used to repay qualified student loans and certain educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education.
Faith Barrow-Waheed, of the library, explained, “A part-time AmeriCorps member working at the library will work 900 hours over an 11-month period, and in return for their service, they will receive an education award and a small living allowance.”
She added that the ideal candidate will have “a willingness to teach others, a good knowledge of technology, and the desire to work with and serve the public.”
Under certain conditions, education awards can be transferred to specific family members.
Barrow-Waheed, who served for a year in the program before being hired by Lima Public Library, said the position should appeal to a variety of people, from young adults in college to retired persons looking to give back to their community to people looking to switch careers.
“There are AmeriCorps programs across the country meeting all kinds of community needs, ranging from tutoring children to refurbishing houses for the needy to do environmental work,” Barrow-Waheed said.
The position starts Sept. 26.
