Reed has low round in junior golf tourney

LIMA — Sam Reed shot a 1-under 69 to win the boys 16-18 division as well as have the low 18-hole round at the Cappie Sportswear Open held Tuesday at Springbrook Golf Club.

Derek Klausing defeated Britton Hensel in a playoff for second after each shot 72.

Jill Schmitmeyer won the girls 16-18 title with a 73 followed by Erin Owens with an 84.

Ethan Harmon was the boys 14-15 winner with a 76. Adam Gerker shot an 86 for second.

In the nine-hole par 35 competition, Carson Harmon (39) was the boys 12-13 winner. Britton Hall defeated Jack Gerker in a playoff for second after each a 45. Mary Kelly Mulcahy was the girls 15 & under winner with a 42. Erin Mulcahy was the runner-up one shot back. Bridget Mulcahy was the pee wee 11 and under medalist with a 48. Haylee Wurm was second with a 51.

The Lima Junior Golf Association – McDonald’s Junior Series will next play Thursday in the Lee Kinstle Open at Hickory Sticks Golf Club in Van Wert.

Ohio Mid Amateur

CANTON — No players from the Lima area made the cut following the second round of the event held at the par-72 Brookside Country Club. Adam Koester of Ottoville finished with a two-day total of 161. Lima’s Scott Geier and Matthew Aakers were at 168 and 174 respectively. Scott Anderson of Columbus leads at 143.

Coldwater wins

CELINA — Sam Broering stole home in the top of the 14th to give Coldwater a 4-3 ACME baseball victory. Broering finished with two hits. Nathan Grunden had a double and two RBI and Brad Giere doubled and had an RBI also for Coldwater. Kole Murlin had three hits, including a double, Seth Lonsway had a double and a triple, and Shawn Rose and Gabe Perry had two hits each for Celina. One of Perry’s hits was a double.

Kortokrax signs

KALIDA — Kalida’s Jordan Kortokrax has signed to compete in track and field at Tiffin University.

ONU teams honored

ADA — The Ohio Northern men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have been named a Scholar All-American Teams for 2015-16 by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

The men’s team had GPA of 3.08 and women’s squad had a GPA of 3.31 for the spring semester to qualify for the honor.

In all, 658 teams representing 388 colleges and universities at the NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and NJCAA levels received the award.
