Auglaize County Educational Academy

celebrates graduation

WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County Educational Academy held a graduation ceremony June 1. The ceremony, the first of its kind for the school, was held at the Auglaize County Educational Service Center in Wapakoneta. There were 17 students who graduated.

The Auglaize County Educational Academy is a local, online, tuition-free school open to all students in grades K-12. Students are provided the technology they need to access all programs needed to successfully complete school online. The school also offers tutoring and classroom assistance for its students at the Auglaize County Educational Service Center in Wapakoneta.

Auglaize and Van Wert County Head Start open spots

WAPAKONETA — Openings for the Head Start half-day preschool program in Auglaize and Van Wert counties. Call 866-627-4557 to complete an application for fall 2016-17 in either the Wapakoneta or Van Wert centers at Kids Learning Place.

This no cost preschool program is open to income eligible, homeless and foster care families with children from 3 to 5 years old. The classrooms include high-quality early-childhood education in a safe and friendly environment, experienced teachers with degrees in every classroom, and teaching plans that match school readiness goals. A home-based visiting program is also available for children birth to 5 years old in both counties.

Area residents receive National Merit Scholarships

WAPAKONETA — The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced some 3,000 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winner from among the finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Sarina M. Dangelo, of Wapakoneta, received the National Merit Scholarship to the University of Alabama. She plans to enter a career field in microbiology/immunology. She attends Wapakoneta High School.

Serena N. Hostetter, of New Knoxville, was awarded the National Merit Scholarship to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. She plans to major in engineering. She attends New Knoxville High School.

Crestview Elementary inducts members

CONVOY — Crestview Elementary inducted students into its Red, White and Blue Clubs. These students have earned this designation based on their academic performance during the third trimester. In order to be eligible for the Blue Club, students must have earned all A’s on the third trimester grade card, and have missed four or fewer days during the third trimester. Red Club members must have all A’s and B’s on the third trimester grade card, and have four or fewer absences during the third trimester. All B’s and four or fewer absences are the criteria for White Club membership.

New immunization requirements for 7th and 12th grades

LIMA — The Allen County Public Health Department is reminding parents of new immunization requirements for students going into seventh and 12th grades. The new state requirement is for the meningococcal vaccine. The vaccine is now required for students entering the seventh grade with a second dose requirement before entering 12th grade. Two doses for seniors will not be required if the first dose was received after age 16 or if the child is a senior and is age 15. Students without proof of vaccination can be subject to exclusion from school.

The Health Department is hosting a clinic for students needing the vaccine from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 31. The regular weekly immunization clinics are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays by appointment only. Costs for immunizations will vary depending upon eligibility requirements, and the Health Department does have the vaccine available for those children who are covered by private insurance. Kalida wins ODOT’s paint the plow contest

KALIDA — The Ohio Department of Transportation announced the paint the plow winners. Kalida High School won this year’s contest.

Paint the plow contest asks area high schools to paint an ODOT plow with their message of school spirit, safety, patriotism or Ohio pride. There were 18 schools from ODOT District 1’s eight-county region participating this year.

Kalida students design included the phrase, “All Gave Some. Some Gave All.” There were 11 students who collaborated on the wining plow.

Elida eighth-grader to attend CampMed at University of Toledo

ELIDA — Elida eighth-grader, Bailey Carder, has been granted a full scholarship to attend CampMed at The University of Toledo on Thursday and Friday. Thirty-nine students were selected from all over northwest Ohio to participate in this two-day educational program designed to encourage a career in science and medicine.

UT faculty, physicians, scientists and students present the program curriculum.

CampMed is a full scholarship program with admission based on demonstrated academic achievement, a personal essay and the recommendation of a teacher/counselor.
