Murder suspect captured in Columbus

COLUMBUS — A Lima man wanted on a murder charge was captured by police in the state capital during the weekend as he and four others tried to run from police officers after a traffic stop.

Whether Jayleon’tre “Tre” Harris, 18, was just not fast enough or whether it was his fate, he was captured as officers ran after him after a traffic stop of a car in which he was traveling.

Detective Tim Clark of the Lima Police Department did not have a lot of details on the traffic stop but was told by officers in Columbus five people inside the car got out and ran after officers stopped the vehicle. Only Harris was caught, and officers soon realized they had a man wanted on a murder charge in Lima.

Officials will begin the extradition process to return Harris to Lima to face charges. He is charged in the May 19 shooting death of 46-year-old Eric Staup, of Lima. Staup was shot in the upper torso at his house at 637 N. Metcalf St.

Harris went to Staup’s home to rob him and during that robbery shot Staup multiple times, investigators said.

Staup’s killing was the second homicide of the year in Lima. Da’Veon Petaway was killed March 7. Petaway was shot once in the abdomen at Meat City at 801 E. Kibby St. Albert McDowell, 16, was arrested in connection with Petaway’s death.
