Rhodes State to host Career Day

LIMA — Rhodes State College will host Career Day 2015 on Friday. Career Day is an annual half-day event intended to provide high school students in northwest Ohio an opportunity to explore 38 college and career-related sessions. This year, 1,937 junior/senior-level students from 39 high schools from seven Ohio counties start their day on campus at 9:30 a.m.

Rhodes State’s Career Day differs from a traditional career fair in that it offers information through sessions, rather than with booths or exhibits. Students register in advance and attend three different career sessions led by area professionals on Career Day. Each 30-minute session provides an opportunity for northwest Ohio students to learn about the education and skills needed to enter and be successful in a specific career and/or industry from professionals first hand.

ONU receives Outstanding New Chapter Award

ADA — The Ohio Northern University chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists has received the Outstanding New Chapter Award from the National Office of SCJ. In order to be considered for this award, a chapter must be reactivated or chartered for two to six years and be recognized as a new and energetic member of the SCJ family.

SCJ listed the chapter’s monthly speakers forum as a reason for selecting ONU for this award. Last semester, the chapter invited Brian Unger, Mandy Jenkins, Amy Eddings and Heather Rutz to campus to speak about the issues facing local and national journalists.

ONU chapter president Ashlee McDonnell, a senior multimedia journalism major from Elida, said, “This is very exciting not only for our chapter but for ONU as well since we have such a rich history with the national society.”

UNOH to sponsor NHRA champions

LIMA — Multi-time Pro Stock champions Jeg Coughlin Jr. and Erica Enders will help spread the message of the University of Northwestern Ohio in 2016 as part of a new partnership between the school and Elite Motorsports’ multi-car Mopar program.

“The University of Northwestern Ohio is thrilled to partner with Elite Motorsports and NHRA Pro Stock champions Erica Enders and Jeg Coughlin Jr., who have combined for eight NHRA titles and 98 national event victories,” UNOH President Dr. Jeffrey A. Jarvis said.

“I think it’s really exciting to have an institute of higher education offer programs for young people interested in the motorsports industry,” Coughlin said. “Being from Ohio, we are very familiar with UNOH and the great work they do educating the next generation of professionals, and we hope to continue to expand the UNOH brand from coast to coast.”

ONU student receives award

ADA — Nick Reza, a senior manufacturing technology major from Ada, was awarded a Society of Manufacturing Engineers Merit Award for the 2015-16 academic year.

Reza, who will receive $750, was selected by faculty members of the ONU Department of Technological Studies based on his participation in the ONU SME Chapter S186, scholastic accomplishments, financial need and application responses. Funds for the awards come from fundraising activities by the ONU SME chapter and the Lima chapter of SME.

Reza served as the treasurer and organized the accounts for the ONU SME chapter. He provided leadership and initiatives for new funding projects, such as serving as primary operator of the LASER engraving projects for the department golf outing, the ONU Lions Club badges and other similar projects. In 2015, Reza received the 2015 ONU SME Chapter Leadership Award.

Rhodes State to honor fallen officers

LIMA — Rhodes State College is taking a multigenerational approach to honor those criminal justice professionals lost in the line of duty in the United States since the beginning of 2015. At 5 p.m. Monday, the college’s criminal justice students will decorate a holiday tree in memory of 142 fallen police and corrections officers, as well as K-9s.

A live spruce located in front of the college’s Technical Education Laboratory will be transformed for the season. In addition to warm white and blue lights, tree decorations will include printed badges designed for the occasion. Each badge is imprinted with the name of one of 142 law enforcement officers and individually colored by children from the Rhodes State Child Care Center.
