O-G pulls away late for 61-44 win

OTTAWA – The new Supreme Court seems to be following in the footsteps of the old one so far.

Ottawa-Glandorf got its second boys basketball win of the season in two games on a newly installed court at Robert J. Hermiller Gymnasium on Friday night when it beat Bowling Green 61-44.

The Titans’ court has long been referred to as the Supreme Court by Ottawa-Glandorf fans.

O-G (2-0) was led by Nick Weihrauch with 19 points, including four first-half 3-pointers, and by two sophomore big men, Jake Dible (13 points) and Jay Kaufman (10 points, 11 rebounds).

Trent Hinton’s 16 points led Bowling Green (0-3).

At times the new floor might have been a little smoother and more consistent than either team’s play, but the Titans pulled away late when they turned a four-point lead into the 17-point final margin in the last seven minutes.

“It’s going to be like that for us. We’ve got a lot of inexperienced guys out there. They’re getting their first minutes of the year or their first significant varsity minutes with new roles. It’s going to take a little bit of time,” Ottawa-Glandorf coach Tyson McGlaughlin said.

O-G appeared ready to take control of the game in the first half when it jumped out to a 25-15 lead with 3:50 left in the half before Bowling Green cut the lead to four points, 32-28, at halftime.

A 3-pointer at the buzzer by Dible gave the Titans a 48-39 lead after three quarters. But, with the help of technical foul called for hanging on the rim after a missed dunk attempt, Bowling Green got back to within four points, 48-44, early in the fourth quarter.

“We showed spurts where we played pretty well and then when got a chance to blow the game open, we made some kind of boneheaded plays. But that’s high school basketball,” McGlaughlin said. “These kids are learning and hopefully by tomorrow night (against Liberty-Benton) we’ll make some more adjustments.”

Bowling Green’s offense, which appeared never to have met a 3-point shot it didn’t like, went cold in the final eight minutes, hitting only 1 of 14 shots in the fourth quarter.

Ottawa-Glandorf shot 45 percent on field goals, including 56 percent the last three quarters after making only 5 of 19 in the first quarter. Bowling Green shot 37 percent (17 of 46).

The Titans outrebounded the Bobcats 33-19. They had 16 turnovers and Bowling Green had 21.

Kaufman a 6-foot, 4-inch sophomore, and Dible, a 6-foot, 6-inch sophomore, both came off the bench and scored 21 of their 23 points in the final three quarters.

“They’re going to play a vital role for our team this year and they’re just trying to get as acclimated to varsity ball as possible,” McGlaughlin said.
