Man faces prison over foodstamp fraud

LIMA — A man who received $15,818 worth of food stamps over three years faces up to 18 months in prison when he is sentenced next month.

A jury this week convicted 29-year-old Jeremy Sharp of grand theft, a fourth-degree felony. Sharpe is scheduled to be sentence Jan. 15 in Allen County Common Pleas Court.

Sharp failed to report income in his household from his girlfriend who was self-employed, said Beth Bunke, the investigations supervisor for the Allen County Department of Job and Family Services.

The theft took place from September 2011 through August 2014, Bunke said.

All income in a household must be reported when a person is receiving some type of public assistance, Bunke said.

“This is something we take very seriously,” Bunke said.
