OTTAWA — After nearly 30 years in office, Judge Randall Basinger said Tuesday he will not seek re-election.
Basinger was elected Putnam County Common Pleas Court judge in the 1986 and began his first term in May 1987. He replaced Judge Henry Mittlekamp.
Basinger did not give a reason.
Meanwhile, two Putnam County attorneys will seek the seat. Assistant Putnam County Prosecutor Todd Schroeder said Tuesday he will file soon as a Democrat. Schroeder has been an attorney since 2002 and is a graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law.
Keith Schierloh has filed as a Republican to seek the position. Schierloh has been an attorney since 1999 and is also a graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law. He has a private practice in Ottawa.
Dec. 16 is the deadline to file as a partisan candidate to run in the spring primary, said Karen Lammers, the director of the Putnam County Board of Elections.
If only Schierloh and Schroeder file as partisan candidates the battle for the seat will take place in the November General Election.
Basinger’s term is up May 9, 2017. He served as a prosecutor in Putnam County before he ran for judge.
