LIMA — A woman who injected her friend with a fatal amount of heroin was sentenced to six years in prison Monday.
Misty Johnson, 39, was carrying out a request from her friend, Jessi Boggs, to give her heroin. Johnson said it was the same amount they used before. But it turned out the unregulated drug created on the streets was potent and deadly.
“I would never hurt her on purpose,” Johnson said. “If I could take her place, I would. I would take her family’s pain away, and I would take my family’s pain away.”
But Judge David Cheney of Allen County Common Pleas Court didn’t seem to think Johnson was sincere. He read off a long history of crime and drug abuse for Johnson that began as a young child. She began abusing alcohol at age 9 and turned to drugs a few years later.
“I’m not the first guy who has talked to you,” Cheney said. “Where did you think this was going to end?”
Johnson was sent to prison for Boggs’ death on June 8. Boggs passed out inside Johnson’s home at 637 ½ N. Main St., Lima, was taken to the hospital, and died.
Travis Kantner, 38, also pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for his role in Boggs’ death. Kantner furnished the drugs to Johnson and Boggs. He is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 16.
Boggs’ brother, Micheal Boggs, said he hopes something good could come out of his sister’s death, such as people seeing the dangers of heroin.
“It’s my hope going through this whole thing that this can be used as an example. I don’t want to see any more moms and dads losing their kids,” he said.
Boggs’ sister, Brandi High, said her sister was a good person and should not be remembered as a “heroin junkie.”
“She really cared for people a lot and didn’t deserve this,” High said.
Prosecutor Juergen Waldick said Boggs’ death highlights the dangers of heroin. He said heroin is not regulated, so users have no idea the potency they are receiving.
