Letter: Girl deserves a big hug

I have volunteered at Lima Memorial Hospital for 20 years. On Oct. 7, I met a family with a wonderful little girl on an elevator. She asked me if I was a veteran and I told her I had served in the Army as a medic during the Korean War. With that she reached in her purse and handed me a hand-written card signed by her with the words, “Thank you for your service.”

I was so taken by this that all I could say was thanks.

At this point we had reached the ground floor and both went our separate ways. I now wish I had given her a big hug and spoken with her for a minute.

Shannon, if you or your parents read this, here is a long distance hug and a sincere thanks from an old vet.

I know the future of the world will be in good hands with children like you.
