Bluffton University gets two softball shutout

BLUFFTON — Great pitching and solid offensive play by the host Beavers keyed an 8-0 mercy-rule victory in game one and a 7-0 win in the second game against Albion College. The sweep of the Britons pushed Bluffton to 12-4 on the season following three straight shutouts. Albion dipped to 6-10 on the season.

In game one, Brittany Huff led the way for the Beavers, going 3-of-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Josie McElroy and Chelsea Zoltowski each collected a pair of hits to go along with two RBI apiece.

Nicole Thomas pitched a complete game shutout and improved to 4-2 on the season. Thomas allowed four hits and fanned four batters in the process.

In game two, Makenzie Schmidt led the way for the Beavers as she smacked a team-high three hits. Teammate Caylin Morstadt was 2-of-4 with three RBI and Carly Levindofske added two hits and an RBI.

Emily Scupholm allowed three infield hits in the victory. She improved to 6-1 on the season and struck out three batters in the complete game shutout.

Baseball

UNOH 11,

Rochester College 0

LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio improved to 23-10 overall and 13-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. Kyle Fisher had two hits, including a homer, and a pair of RBI and DayFran Ortiz had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI for UNOH. Mike Alexander got the pitching victory, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Bluffton 3, Anderson 1

BLUFFTON — Bluffton got all its runs in the seventh inning to improve to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference following the early-morning wake-up call due to projected rain Saturday. Anderson fell to 7-9 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

Luke Hickey went 3-of-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the host Beavers. Austin Prosser had a pair of RBI. Ottawa-Glandorf graduate Jaylen Von Sossan fanned five and issued a walk while allowing one unearned run on four hits in a 7 1/3 innings outing, earning his first victory of the season. His ERA dipped to 2.16 for the season with 18 strikeouts.

ONU drops 2

ADA — Ohio Northern fell 9-4 and 4-2 to No. 20-ranked Otterbein at Wander Field.

The Polar Bears moved to 8-9 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Cardinals improved to 14-4, (2-0 OAC).

In game one junior Jason Burkett led ONU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Hayden Shenefield led the Polar Bears in game two, going 1-for-3 at the plate, including a home run, two RBI and a run scored.

Men’s golf

Racers in third

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — UNOH opened spring season play in tthe Tusculum Invitational at the Link Hills Golf and Country Club.

The No. 8 Racers shot 291 on the day and sit in a tie for third place alongside Brevard College. Host Tusculum College is in first with a 286, and Spartanburg Methodist College is one stroke ahead of UNOH with a 290.

The Racers’ Lewis Scott and Kaleb Kuhn are in a four-way tie for fourth place. Both opened the event with a 70 (-1).

The event will resume today.

Women’s lacrosse

St. Mary’s 16, ONU 10

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Rachel Shipman scored a career-high six goals for Ohio Northern at the Purcell Athletic Field.

The Polar Bears (1-6 overall) also got a hat trick from Elizabeth Carter against the Belles (2-3).

Men’s lacrosse

ONU 21, Franciscan 7

STEUBENVILLE — Ohio Northern got four goals each from Lucas Blaszyk and Max Weese at Memorial Field.

The Polar Bears (5-3) have won four straight record while the Barons fell to 2-3.
