Mathias scores 19, but No. 20 Purdue upset by Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. — An improbable trio led the way as Nebraska ended its five-game losing streak and upset 20th-ranked Purdue.

There was Jack McVeigh, who has a love-hate relationship with his 3-point shot, and Jeriah Horne, who didn’t even play in the Cornhuskers’ previous game by coach’s decision.

And then there was Michael Jacobson, who took intravenous fluids at halftime after getting sick to his stomach twice in the first half.

McVeigh and Horne came off the bench to combine for 37 points and 10 rebounds, and Jacobson’s putback gave Nebraska the lead with 42 seconds left in an 83-80 victory Sunday.

Dakota Mathias made 5 of 7 3-pointers and scored 19 points to lead Purdue (17-5, 6-3), which lost for the first time in four games. Carsen Edwards had 16 points, and Caleb Swanigan had 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Michigan State 70, Michigan 62

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State had a trio of freshmen play like savvy and talented veterans in their first game against Michigan.

Miles Bridges had 15 points and 13 rebounds, Cassius Winston scored 16 and Nick Ward added 13 points to lead the Spartans in a 70-62 win over the Wolverines on Sunday.

Michigan State (13-9, 5-4 Big Ten) won its fifth straight game in the series and ended a three-game losing streak this season, giving its NCAA Tournament hopes a boost.

The Wolverines (14-8, 4-5) had won two straight and three of four, improving its chances of getting off the bubble and into the NCAA Tournament.

“If both teams are playing for a championship, it’s big,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “But if both teams are playing for survival, it’s just as big or even bigger.”

Derrick Walton scored 19 of his season-high 24 points after halftime for the Wolverines.

Cincinnati 94, South Florida 53

CINCINNATI — Freshman Jarron Cumberland scored 18 of his career-high 26 points in the second half as No. 19 Cincinnati rolled to its 12th straight victory on Sunday, 94-53 over South Florida.

The Bearcats (19-2, 8-0 American Athletic) used their bench often against the conference’s last-place team. Cincinnati extended its longest winning streak since it took 15 in a row during 2013-14.

South Florida (6-14, 0-9) has dropped nine straight, a streak that includes the firing of coach Orlando Antigua on Jan. 3. The Bulls also lost nine in a row last season, when they finished 8-25. Michael Bibby scored 17 for the Bulls, who had a season-high 24 turnovers.

Xavier 82, St. John’s 77

NEW YORK — Trevon Bluiett had 21 points and 10 rebounds and No. 24 Xavier held off a big rally from St. John’s for an 82-77 victory Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

Edmond Sumer had 17 points and seven assists for the Musketeers (15-6, 5-3 Big East), but he was helped off the court by teammates with six minutes to play. He made a basket and was hit as he scored, but he had an apparent injury to his left leg. He was unable to take the free throw.

Northwestern 68, Indiana 55

EVANSTON, Ill. — Bryant McIntosh had 21 points and eight assists, leading surging Northwestern to a 68-55 victory over Indiana on Sunday.

The Wildcats (18-4, 7-2) held the Hoosiers to 32 percent shooting in their sixth consecutive victory. It’s their longest Big Ten win streak since the 1932-33 team matched a school record with seven in a row, and their 7-2 start in conference play is their best since the 1937-38 season.

Villanova 61, Virginia 59

PHILADELPHIA — Donte DiVicenzo beat the buzzer on a tip-in to lead No. 1 Villanova to a 61-59 win over No. 12 Virginia on Sunday.

The Wildcats (20-2) played their worst half of the season before they found their 3-point groove that fueled a second-half rally. They had the ball with 11.5 seconds left and the game tied. Josh Hart drove the lane and missed his layup. DiVincenzo zipped down the baseline and tipped the ball in with his outstretched right hand just as the horn sounded.
