Beth Seibert selected as interim Allen County Commissioner

LIMA — Beth Seibert was appointed Tuesday night by the Allen County Republican Central Committee as Allen County commissioner to fill the unexpired term of Jay Begg, who retired after being injured in a home accident.

Keith Cheney, executive chairman of the Allen County Republican Party, made the announcement during a meeting of the central committee at Allen County Jobs and Family Services Office.

“We made it very clear when the unfortunate accident happened to commissioner Begg that this appointment would be whomever the Republican primary electorate selected,” Cheney said.

Seibert will hold the interim position until January. At that time, the winner of the general election will assume the job full-time. That race sees Republican Seibert facing off against Democrat Norman Capps and independent Dan Beck.

Seibert won the Republican primary election for the position, earning nearly 60% of the votes, more than three times as many votes as the second-place contender, Greg Stolly, who has 18.61% of the votes cast. Third place went to Tim Sielschott, while fourth was Judy Augsburger and fifth was Alan D. Tyrrell Jr.

Seibert was honored to be selected for the position and realizes there’s much to do between now and the general election in November.

“I’m looking forward to working with Cory (Noonan) and Greg (Sneary) and I think they’ve got an amazing amount of experience and I know there’s a lot to learn in this job and I want to hit the ground running and that’s what I’m planning to do,” Seibert said.

Seibert will be sworn in later in the week, after the State of Ohio approves her selection.

She has resigned her position with the Lima-Allen County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Another commissioner seat will be coming open in the future, as current commissioner Greg Sneary said Tuesday he still plans to retire. Sneary had announced his retirement but then held off when Begg resigned.

“I’ll stay on to help the new person get acclimated, then I’ll retire,” Sneary said.
