O-G overwhelms LCC

LIMA – Ottawa-Glandorf has the size and the power.

Then, toss in some quality 3-point shooting.

It was way too much for Lima Central Catholic to handle.

Ottawa-Glandorf ran away from LCC 76-41 in a boys basketball game Saturday at Edward Herr Gymnasium.

Not only did the Titans win the boards easily, 47-26, they owned a 16-9 advantage at the offensive end.

Then, toss in the fact that the Titans hit 13 of 27 on 3-pointers and there wasn’t much the T-Birds’ defense could do to stop it.

LCC is 3-2. O-G stands 4-0.

“It was pick your poison,” LCC coach Frank Kill said. “Unfortunately, they shot the ball extremely well. They hit seven threes in the third quarter.

“I thought our effort was there. When you get down 15-1 and dig yourself in a big hole against an Ottawa team it’s extremely tough to come back. … And when you’re shooting over 6-7, 6-7, you can’t practice that.’’

O-G’s 6-foot-7 Owen Nichols had 18 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

O-G’s other 6-7 post player, Ben Westrick, had 14 points.

“Everything starts with them (the two post players),” Kill said. “We had to get the ball out of their hands so they weren’t shooting layups. We figured we’d give up 22 footers for 2-footers.’’

Then, there was the outside game for the Titans.

O-G’s Brennen Blevins had 19 points with five 3-pointers.

Parker Schomaeker had 14 points and four 3-pointers.

“We haven’t shot that well from the outside, but Brennen is one of the better shooters and not just in northwest Ohio,” O-G coach Tyson

McGlaughlin said. “He got into a rhythm. … And Parker shoots the ball really well. He’s been waiting his turn.’’

For LCC, Biggz Johnson had 14 points. Rossy Moore had eight points and five rebounds.

O-G ran out to a quick 8-0 lead behind two quick 3-pointers by Schomaeker.

Then, the Titans looked inside to Nichols and Westrick.

The Titans bounced their lead to 17-1 with 2:42 left in the first quarter.

By the end of the first quarter O-G led 22-5.

After one quarter, Westrick had eight points on four layups.

The Titans played the rebound-and-run game when they had the advantage.

When they didn’t, it was dump it inside to the big guys, who jammed it home or fired it outside to the 3-point line.

The Titans had a 13-5 rebounding advantage after one quarter.

By the half, O-G led 35-17.

Nichols had 12 points and eight rebounds by halftime.

“We start inside-out,” McGlaughlin said. “And he (Nichols) has really worked hard in the offseason and got his body in better shape. And when they started to double, they kicked it out.

“It’s something we like (two post players). The game has changed with so many guys out on the perimeter. But we have to use our strengths to help other guys out. If they double, that opens other guys up.’’

It didn’t help LCC that 6-5 Rodney Bennett wasn’t available because he was out of town on a family trip.

LCC chipped into the O-G lead in the third quarter and cut the margin to 37-22 with 5:54 left in the third.

Then, came a barrage of OG threes.

The Titans sank five straight 3-pointers and the lead mushroomed to 52-22 with 2:55 left in the third.

During that run, Schomaeker hit two 3-pointers in a row. Then, Blevins drained three 3-pointers in a row to cap the 15-0 run.

LCC wouldn’t make another run after that.
