Children set lawnmower ablaze

LIMA — A group of three children set a lawnmower on fire, causing little damage.

The incident was reported as at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday at 233 W. Kibby St., Lima, as a small building fire, the Lima Fire Department said.

Upon arrival, officials noticed an older, “rusted out” lawnmower, suspected to be about 20 years old, and damage done to the mower, the fire department said.

The fire was extinguished before officials arrived on scene.

After a brief investigation, officials discovered that the three children set the mower on fire with “lighter fluid and a lighter,” the fire department said.

They were then “encouraged” to attend fire safety courses to correct their behavior.

About $50 in damage was caused to the garage and lawnmower, the fire department said.

The home is owned by Wilma D. Peterson and Jeffery K. Kirkman, of Lima, according to the Allen County Auditor’s website. The home is valued at $23,500.
