MINSTER — The young men of Coldwater were not about to be outdone by the Lady Cavaliers and exploded out of the gate on Saturday afternoon with a score of 1,129 in game one of the OHSAA Division II Sectional at Community Lanes.

The Cavaliers were paced by Trey James and Tyler Wenning who each shot 266, which ended up being the high games of the day.

Behind the Cavaliers there were several schools who set a pace of their own to battle for the remaining three spots in the D-II Rossford District on Friday.

St Henry rolled 942 and was followed by St Marys (938), Van Wert (936) and Ottawa-Glandorf (934).

Lima Central Catholic, one of the favorites going into the day, started with a 845 but rallied in game two with a score of 978 largely behind the efforts of Westin Young who logged a 251 game.

Coldwater stroked a 1,029 to stay on top with a score of 2,158.

LCC moved into the top four nestled in between St. Henry and Ottawa-Glandorf which were in second and third and Van Wert and St. Marys which were fifth and sixth. The five teams were separated by 78 pins.

Coldwater dropped back to the pack some in game three with a 909 but was still very secure at the top.

LCC made another jump up the standings in game three with a 1,020 and St Henry closed the gap on Coldwater with a 1,012. The top two at that point were Coldwater and St. Henry.

LCC was in third at 2,843, 59 pins out of second and 38 pins up on O-G. Van Wert and St Marys were still very close, within 119 pins of O-G, as the tournament entered the six baker games that would determine the four heading to district action.

Coldwater tallied a 1,262 for six baker games and took top honors with a 4,329 total. LCC continued its rally, totaling 1,205 for baker action and securing second place (4,048).

St. Henry did struggle in the baker action with a 1,059, the lowest of the top six but held third as a result of its strong play in the traditional 10-pin team games, finishing with 3,961.

O-G held on to take fourth with 3,867, outdistancing Van Wert (3,816) and St. Marys (3,808).

Coldwater’s Cory Whitacre took individual honors in the tournament with a 663, followed by teammates Blake Spangler (653) and Wenning (646). Troy Buehler (620) of St Henry and James Riepenhoff (617) of LCC rounded out the top five.

Troy Bruggerman of Marion Local missed the trip to Rossford by one pin last season but this year he was able to grab the brass ring as a result of a solid 565 set. He will be joined in singles action by Austin Cook (589) of St Marys, Gabe Rollins (586) of Van Wert and Caleb Alig (581) of New Bremen.
