BLUFFTON — The Defiance College men’s basketball team could not hold off a second-half rally and saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with a 70-68 loss against Bluffton University in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game.
Defiance (10-4, 5-2 HCAC) led by 12 points at halftime, but was outscored, 46-32, in the second half.
Thayne Recker led Bluffton (7-7, 3-4) with a game-high 34 points. Teammate Andrew Finley scored 17.
UNOH 83, Madonna 73
LIVONIA, Mich. — With the University of Northwestern Ohio (14-5, 9-2 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) trailing by five and 11:23 to play in the game, Lawrence Jackson scored 18-straight points for the Racers as a part of an 18-3 run that gave UNOH a 66-56 lead on its way to a win over Madonna University (7-12, 3-8 WHAC).
Jackson scored a game-high 27 points, making 5-of-11 3-pointers in the process. Aaron Cross scored 14, Davon Payne added 11, and Josh Scott poured in 10 for the Racers as well. Scott added a team-high five rebounds and six assists in the game.
Women’s basketball
ONU 69, Wilmington 52
WILMINGTON — Jordan Kimes posted her third double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 16 assists to lead Ohio Northern to a victory at Raizk Arena.
The Polar Bears improved to 11-3 overall and remain atop the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 7-0 record, while the Quakers fell to 8-6 and 3-4 in the OAC.
Kimes now has seven double-doubles in her career.
Kerri Beedy and Carly Thomas each scored 13 points and Karissa Steffas added 11 points for ONU.
The Polar Bears will be at home at 1 p.m. Saturday against Baldwin Wallace in a battle for first place in the OAC at the ONU Sports Center.
Bluffton 86, Defiance 78
BLUFFTON — Taylor Knight (17), Mikayla Coburn (15), Kaitlyn Pennekamp (14), Macey Sheerer (13) and Brenna Kurilec (12) all finished in double digits for Bluffton (10-4, 5-2 HCAC) against Defiance (4-10, 3-4 HCAC).
Madonna 81, UNOH 77
LIVONIA, Mich. – UNOH (8-11, 6-5 WHAC) held a 77-76 lead before Madonna (11-6, 10-1 WHAC) scored the final five points of the game at the foul line to take the win, 81-77.
The Crusaders controlled the game early, building a 23-14 lead with 10:06 to play in the half. The Racers bounced back, though. Over the next six and a half minutes, the Racers scored 20 points while holding Madonna to just three made field goals as UNOH surged in front to a 34-31 lead. A quick 8-0 Madonna run recaptured the lead for the Crusaders at 39-34, and at the break, the Racers trailed 41-36.
Madonna stretched their lead back out to nine in the opening stages of the second stanza, taking a 60-51 lead with 11:18 to go in the game. Again, however, the Racers surged in front as Madison Coldren ignited a 9-0 Racers’ run that put UNOH ahead 69-66 with 5:46 remaining. In the final 5:40 of play, Madonna made only two field goals – one from behind the arc – but they took advantage of more than ample opportunities at the foul line. The Crusaders scored 10 points from the line in the final five minutes, including five in the final 1:03 to come from behind and take the win 81-77.
The Racers’ Madison Coldren notched a double-double in the game, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 boards. Eboni Adams added 14 points, Sammi Dervisevic chipped in 11, and Becca Harshman added 10. Dervisevic added four assists and three steals in the loss to lead the Racers as well.
