Communities set up cooling stations

BLUFFTON — In the wake of power outages and expected extreme heat in the area, some communities are setting up cooling stations to help residents get out of the heat and charge essential devices.

The Bluffton EMS building, 115 E. Washington St., has been set up as a cooling station for those needing to recharge medical devices, according to an alert from Bluffton schools. The Bluffton Town Hall had originally been set up as a cooling station, but the station had to be moved when the HVAC system at the hall stopped working.

Medical devices will be given priority over other electronic devices needing to be charged. Service animals will be the only animals permitted in the building.

The alert also notes that, with phone lines down in the area, the 911 emergency line should only be used for emergencies to help keep the lines clear. For non-emergency calls, residents are instructed to call the Allen County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 419-227-3535.

Other cooling stations include Trinity United Methodist Church, 137 N. Pratt St., Ottawa and Kalida Church, 312 N. Broad St., Kalida. Both stations will be open from 3 to 9 p.m. For more information, contact Trinity UMC at 419-523-6496 or Kalida Church at 419-523-3474.
