COLUMBUS — As is always the case on a judgment call, one side will see it as a miscarriage of justice and the other as a stepping stone to success.

Wes Detter made the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime and — also hit two foul shots late in regulation after a controversial technical-foul call — to lift Defiance to a 49-45 victory over Cleveland Central Catholic in the Division II state title game on Saturday night.

CCC’s Antwon Lillard, who scored 24 points, had flown down the heart of the lane for a dunk with 44 seconds left in regulation that gave the Ironmen (24-5) a four-point lead.

But he was called for hanging on the rim, resulting in Defiance (27-2) getting two technical foul shots and the ball. Detter made the two shots to cut the lead in half before Kameron Singleton scored off an assist from his brother Katwan in the final seconds to force the fateful overtime.

COLUMBUS — The play, as coach Josh Sagester drew it up, was as simple as it could possibly be.

Colton Linkous scored 22 points — and hit the game-winning 12-foot jumper with 3 seconds left — to lift No. 1 New Madison Tri-Village (30-0) to the Division IV state championship w over Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (25-5).

Wayne 65, Westerville South 57

COLUMBUS — It might have been the first time that Huber Heights Wayne (26-4) had ever been to the boys state basketball tournament, but the Warriors played like they were grizzled vets.

D’Mitrik Trice scored 19 points to lead the way to the Division I state championship with a victory over Westerville South (27-2).
