LIMA — A man who stole a truck wrecked it shortly after being noticed by police.

At about 7:45 a.m., officers noticed a vehicle reported stolen from American Township was being driven on Harrison Avenue, said Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish said.

The American Township Police Department did not return phone calls seeking comment Thursday afternoon.

When a Lima Police Department patrol vehicle turned on its lights, the driver of the stolen vehicle sped away. Noticing children walking to school, officers were reluctant to engage in a high-speed pursuit, the LPD said.

The driver of the vehicle was traveling about 55 mph when it crashed into a fire hydrant and then a tree at the intersection of Eureka Street and Prospect Avenue, the LPD said.

Once the silver Ford pickup crashed, the man ran away but was tracked down by officers. The man, who is a Lima resident, was the only person in the truck.

The man had not been charged, as he was still in the process of interviews with officials Thursday afternoon.

The driver was uninjured and was placed into custody with the Lima Police Department without incident.

His name was not released. No further information was available Thursday afternoon.
