Rhodes State is hosting an annual career day for high school students for more than 1,000 high school juniors and seniors from 26 area high schools on at 9:45 to 11:50 a.m. Friday

The Ohio Northern University Department of History, Politics and Justice is presenting a lecture on “Slavery in the Heart of Abolitionist Country: Rethinking the History of Slavery in New England” by Jared Hardesty in the Dicke Forum in the Dicke Building on at 5 p.m. March 26.

The University of Findlay Jazz Ensemble will present “Swing’s the Thing” at its annual Spring Concert. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Winebrenner Theological Seminary’s TLB Auditorium.

Ohio Northern University professional writing students and area professionals will conduct a series of free mini-lectures on new media skills through April 30. Sessions will be held in the Dukes Building (room 151) at 3 p.m. Thursdays.

The Ohio Northern University Department of Music presents a guest vocal recital titled “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings: A Celebration of Paul Lawrence Dunbar” in the Snyder Recital Hall in the Presser Building on at 8 p.m. Friday.

Bluffton University’s Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) is offering a trail biking class this spring for both interested retirees and the semiretired. Local bicyclists Paul and Mary Fleck will lead the class, whose first meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. March 26 in the ILR classroom, located in Shultz Hall of Riley Court on campus. Cost is $50; the registration deadline is Friday.

Four Bluffton University art students will display “The Art in Us”— their senior exhibition — from Monday to April 2 in the Grace Albrecht Gallery in Sauder Visual Arts Center. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 5 p.m. March 28 and 29. A reception for the artists will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. March 29.

“Living and Learning in the Contact Zone” will be speaker Kate Spike’s topic for Bluffton University’s Civic Engagement Forum on Tuesday in Founders Hall. Her 11 a.m. presentation is free and open to the public.

Larry Starr, head athletic trainer for the Cincinnati Reds for 21 years, including the “Big Red Machine” teams of the 1970s, will be the keynote speaker for Bluffton University’s annual Civic Engagement Day. His March 25 address on athletics and lifelong learning is free and open to the public beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Yoder Recital Hall.

The Ohio Northern University Symphonic Band presents its spring concert in the Freed Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Numbers, patterns, and mathematics will combine to create visually appealing images at The University of Findlay’s 28th Annual Math Day slated for Tuesday. Robert “Bob” Bosch will be speaking about how he uses optimization to devise and refine methods for creating pictures, portraits and sculpture. He will provide an introduction on the topic at 10 a.m. in UF’s Alumni Memorial Union Multipurpose Room, and will discuss “Opt Art: Special Cases and New Directions” at 1 p.m. in the same location.

On Wednesday Bluffton University will host Civic Engagement Day.Activities will be held campuswide throughout the day, centering around Bluffton’s 2014-15 civic engagement theme, “Education Matters! Learning for Life, Vocation and Responsible Citizenship.”

Molly Davis of Spencerville was named to Marymount University’s Fall 2014 Dean’s List.

AWARDS

Dr. Debra McCurdy, president of Rhodes State College, was named the recipient of the 2015 Bowling Green State University College Alumni Award for the College of Education and Human Development. The award was presented March 7.

Ohio Northern University student Emily Fanello, a senior medical laboratory science major from Medina, has been named the recipient of two medical laboratory science scholarships.The first scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is from the Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics-American Society for Clinical Pathology partnership.The second is a $1,000 scholarship from the Ohio Chapter of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

The National Institute of Mental Health has awarded Ohio Northern University an Academic Research Enhancement Award to conduct research that could provide new insights into traumatic memory formation and ultimately lead to more-targeted treatment options for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder.
