Great play at the local lanes

We have often remarked how this area explodes into a realm of bowling greatness and events this time of the year. The successes will range from the local lanes to the intercity to state and national action.

What is even more fantastic is that our area is always well represented when this occurs. This year has not been any different.

On the local lanes this week, we have had at least three perfect games, all on Wednesday evening. Adam Bowers rolled his first at 20th Century, and Kyle Profitt grabbed his first perfecto at Delphos Bowling and Recreation. Louie Rhine has shot 300 before, and he tallied yet another at 20th Century about the same time that Bowers rolled his.

Wednesday night must be the night to bowl in our area!

The Ohio Women’s Intercity has long been a very popular location for our Lima area bowlers. This year has not been an exception. It was just two short weeks ago that a very talented group of ladies from St. Marys made the trip to Wooster and had some amazing success.

Peg Lowery, Kim Parent and June Brandewie led the charge of the adult Roughriders and established a norm for all other small cities to meet when the arrive.

Shelley Ambroza, Sarah Smith, Misty Lee, Sarah Moore and Kari Miller of Lima were among the next group of bowlers to assault Wooster.

In team action, this stellar group was firm in the top five of both the actual and handicap standings going into action this week. Miller, Moore and Ambroza may have paced the group with a composite score over 2100 but I am hearing on the side that it was Smith and Lee that supplied the motivation.

Miller would tally a yet-to-be-made-official 2084 total for the three events (team, singles and doubles) that was good enough for top honors at the time this is written as was her 2291 handicap total.

For the district and state piece of the action, we have the the OHSAA Division II state and Division I district action this weekend.

Wayne Webb World (as it is lovingly referred) in Columbus is the host to Division II play. The varsity boys and girls of Coldwater as well as James Riepenhoff of LCC are our only local contestants in Division II. While the number is low in this category, Riepenhoff dn the Cavaliers clearly have the needed talent to medal.

The Division I District is being held at Eastern Lanes in Northwood, Ohio, a facility that kind of put me in the mind of Moreo Lanes or even Southgate when I entered to check it out earlier this week. It was Moreo Lanes by the décor and pure Southgate by the music being played.

Division I will be a very dynamic setting with great talent on display.

The Division I defending state champion is there – Wapakoneta – on the boys varsity side of things, and the Redskins certainly look like they have a chance to return.

The story may be the Division I girls, however. I am told that Wapakoneta and Bowling Green looked phenomenal, but the great story was Shawnee. All I am going to say for this review is, wow, has this team arrived.

Finally, it is indeed about time that I plug one of the many great bowling events that Bruce VanMeter and his amazing family runs at Delphos Bowling and Recreation.

This coming Saturday, March 14, they will host the DBC Scratch Sport Shot Shootout. The cost for the event is $45, with the chance to earn as much as $700. You can call the lanes at 419-692-2695 to see if there are any openings.

See you at the lanes.
