LIMA — The Lima Police Department made an arrest Wednesday morning after noticing a smell of raw marijuana coming from a residence.

Two patrolmen were driving in the 1400 block of West High Street when they noticed the odor of raw marijuana. They said they were able to determine the odor was coming from 1418 W. High St. Members of the West Central Ohio Crime Task Force were contacted and assisted the officers in obtaining a search warrant for the residence.

Upon execution of the search warrant, officers found the resident, Burton K. Goens II, 54, hiding in the basement. A marijuana grow operation was found in a hidden room in the basement. The operation consisted of 30 marijuana plants, florescent lights and miscellaneous gardening equipment. Goens was taken into custody and charged with suspicion of cultivating marijuana. Additional charges will likely be presented to a grand jury.

The approximate weight of the marijuana was 4.7 kilograms or about 10 pounds.

The incident remained under investigation as further charges were pending.
