LIMA — What SpartanNash does to stay modern in the evolving world of food distribution is nothing new. It just applies an old concept of building strong relationships with customers.

Taking care of its customers is a top priority at SpartanNash, leading it to be one of the largest food distributors in the United States and the largest distributor to the U.S. military commissary and exchange in the world.

SpartanNash has a local distribution center in Lima at 1100 Prosperity Road, just off Neubrecht Road. The company’s headquarters is located in Grand Rapids, Mich. The company has 165 corporate-owned stores throughout nine states, and there are 1,900 independent retailers who count of the company to supply their stores in more than 40 states.

There are 260 employees at the Lima location to serve customers in the area, with longevity a staple of the local operation.

“Thirty-eight warehouse associates and 10 drivers were hired in 1990 or earlier. The number of long-term associates and an extensive number of father-son, mother-son, husband-wife and brothers employed at the distribution center contribute to our motto: ‘Lima proud,” Distribution Director Greg Ratliff said in a written statement.

That longevity supports the commitment employees have to each other, the community and those they serve, Ratliff said.

The local facility has an on-site repair garage, truck-wash facility and a fueling center to support the transportation fleet. Local truck drivers at the company log 5.5 million miles each year, primarily in Ohio and Michigan but also in nearby states.

The Lima facility is 497,000 square feet of warehouse and offices that house a grocery, meat, dairy and frozen products operation.
