O-G’s Samuelson 7th at state in backstroke

CANTON — Ottawa-Glandorf’s Kathryn Samuelson was top Lima area individual winner at the Division II state swimming tournament held Friday at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.

Samuelson finished seventh in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.12 seconds.

Other area girl competitors included Kenton’s Mo Gray in the 100 breaststroke (10th, 1:07.77) the Wapakoneta 200 freestyle relay team of Josie Miller, Sierra Sammons, Jordyn Law and Abbi Gesler, which finished 13th in 1 minutes, 41.75 seconds, the Celina 200 freestyle relay team of Megan Muhlenkamp, McKenna Black, Amanda Slechter and Cami Dzendzel which was 16th in 1:42.22 and the Ottawa-Glandorf 200 medley relay team of Samuelson, Brooke Kleman, Amber Ellerbrock and Briana Fenbert which was 11th in 1:52.84. Miller also was 12th in the 50 freestyle (24.68).

Among area boys, Wapakoneta’s Charlie Sutton (eighth, 21.91), Ada’s Mitchell Wilcox (10th, 21.96) Celina’s Mason Baker (13th, 22.26) and Shawnee’s Cobie Mikesell (15th, 22.36) all competed in the 50 freestyle. Mikesell was 16th in the 100 freestyle (48.63) and was part of Shawnee’s seventh place 200 freestyle team with Noah Curl, Chris Soules and Joey Ellis which had a time of 1:27.97. The same four Shawnee swimmers were eighth in the 400 freesytle relay with a time of 3:16.28.

Skyler Tavenner of Indian Lake was ninth in the 100 backstroke (53.46). Ada’s Mitchell Wilcox was 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.03) and Wapak’s 200 freestyle relay team of Wesley Ruedebusch, Michael Johnston, Sutton and Michael Zwez was 16th with a time of 1:30.75.

The Shawnee boys finished 15th in the team event with 56 points followed by Celina (34th, 17 points), Coldwater (37th, 15 points), Wapak (38th, 13 points) and Ada (39th, 12 points)

Ottawa-Glandorf had the highest girls team score of 24 which put the Titans in 25th place. Wapak was 32nd with 13 points followed by Kenton (4oth, 7 points) and Celina (41st, six points).

Wrestling sectionals

Division II

Wapakoneta (64 points) was in fifth place, Elida in sixth (44) and Bath in seventh (40.5) after the first day Oak Harbor. Shawnee was tied for ninth (33), St. Marys was 12th (20.5) and Celina was 16th (3). The host school was in first place with 88.5 points. At Sandusky, keton was tied for seventh (34) with Perkins leading the way with 77.5 points.

Division III

At Lima Central Catholic, Coldwater was in first place (94 points) followed by Columbus Grove (52.5), Allen East (47), LCC (45.5), Wayne Trace (43.5), Delphos St. John’s (43), Ada (34), Delphos Jefferson and Spencerville (33 each), Bluffton (24), Van Wert (18), Parkway (6) and Lincolnview (5.5).

At Lake High School in Millbury Lake, Ottawa-Glandorf was in seventh place with 29.5 points. Genoa Area was atop the standings with 82 points.
