Suggested head: Key league hoops match-ups around the area: Conference wrestling championships set for this weekend
Here is a look at some of the top high school events involving area teams for the remainder of the week.
Girls basketball
Ottawa-Glandorf (16-2, 5-1 Western Buckeye League) at Wapakoneta (14-3, 5-1 WBL)
When: 7:30 tonight
Ottawa-Glandorf pounded Napoleon 49-29 in nonleague action on Tuesday. Erin Basinger led the Titans with 12 points.
Wapakoneta is fresh off a 52-34 win over Bellefontaine on Monday in nonleague action. Megan Watt led Wapakoneta with 21 points, including seven 3-pointers. The seven 3-pointers by Watt tied the school record. Carly Buzzard added 12 points for the Redskins.
Odds and ends: With Bath being the lone undefeated team in the WBL, both O-G and Wapakoneta need to win in order to stay in the hunt for a WBL title. O-G and Wapakoneta are the only two WBL teams with one loss.
The Brass Tacks: This should be a very highly-contested match-up.
Bath (15-1, 6-0 Western Buckeye League) at Shawnee (7-11, 3-3 WBL)
When: 7:30 tonight
Last Thursday, Bath was deadly from the outside, hitting 11 3-pointers, en route to a 55-24 win over Van Wert. Maddie Dackin led the Wildkittens with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Teammate Alyssa Manley scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Bath’s defensive pressure helped cause 21 Van Wert turnovers.
Shawnee was tripped up by Wayne Trace in nonleague action on Tuesday, 60-52. Maryssa Herschler led the Indians with 18 points, while teammate Rachel Evans scored 11.
Odds and ends: Bath is probably playing its best basketball right now. After its win over Van Wert last week, the Wildkittens have now reeled off 39 straight regular-season WBL wins. The Wildkittens are vying for their fifth straight WBL title. The young Shawnee squad is looking for the upset against Bath.
The Brass Tacks: This has always been a competitive, hard-fought cross-town match-up.
Boys basketball
Temple Christian (8-6, 3-2 Northwest Central Conference) at Perry (13-3, 5-0 NWCC)
When: 7:45 p.m. Friday
Temple Christian is coming off a 48-42 victory over Bradford this past Saturday. Markus Howell led the Pioneers with 18 points. Teammate Joey Hutchison added 13.
After losing its first three games of the season, Perry has reeled off 13 straight wins. The Commodores are fresh off a 73-51 victory over Bath on Tuesday. Jakoby Lane-Harvey led Perry with 21 points. Jared Poling scored 19 points and became the all-time scoring leader for Perry during the Bath contest. Plummie Gardner scored 17 and Xavier Monford added 12 for the Commodores.
Odds and ends: Perry is in control of its own destiny as it pursues an NWCC title.
The Brass Tacks: With the proximity of the two schools, this has been a very competitive cross-town match-up over the years.
Lima Senior (11-3, 7-2 Three Rivers Athletic Conference) at Fremont Ross (4-12, 1-8 TRAC)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
After losing to Three Rivers Athletic Conference-leader Toledo St. John’s last Friday, Lima Senior bounced back with a solid 78-60 win over visiting Toledo Central Catholic this past Tuesday in TRAC action.
Against Central Catholic, Lima Senior had 11 players crack the scoring column. Elijah Pughsley led the Spartans with 15 points. Teammates Xavier Simpson and Ruben Flowers added 11 and 10, respectively.
Fremont Ross gave Findlay everything it could handle in Tuesday’s TRAC match-up. However, Findlay held off Fremont Ross for a thrilling 58-57 victory.
James Wright led the Little Giants against Findlay with 20 points.
Odds and ends: With two losses in the TRAC, the Spartans need to get back on course in order to give itself a chance in the TRAC title race. In its first meeting this season with Fremont Ross, Lima Senior won 75-63. Simpson led the Spartans with 28 points.
The Brass Tacks: The Spartans are looking to stay on track the rest of the way in order to stay in the hunt.
Wrestling
Western Buckeye League Championships
When: first-round action begins at 9 a.m.
Where: Ottawa-Glandorf
Teams that will compete include: Bath, Defiance, Elida, Shawnee, Celina, Wapakoneta, Kenton, Van Wert, St. Marys and Ottawa-Glandorf.
Heading into Saturday’s WBL Tournament (as of Wednesday), Defiance is 8-0 in regular-season duals, while Wapakoneta is 8-1 in duals. The overall league title is figured between the teams’ dual record and WBL Tournament finish.
Last season, Defiance won both the WBL Tournament and the overall WBL title.
Northwest Conference Championships
When: first-round action begins at 10 a.m. Saturday
Where: Bluffton
Teams that will compete: Ada, Allen East, Bluffton, Columbus Grove, Delphos Jefferson, Lincolnview, Paulding and Spencerville.
Paulding won the NWC team title last season.
Three Rivers Athletic Conference Championships
When: first-round action begins at 11 a.m. Saturday
Where: Findlay High School
Lima Senior will be the lone area school to compete at the TRAC Championships.
