New program reaches out to exceptional students

Open to any parent, the first Allen County Exceptional Student meeting will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Met in downtown Lima.

The group is to help high-achieving students cope with issues like social and emotional health, anxiety, perfectionism and other struggles.

Annual banquet announced

The Shawnee Optimist meeting Feb. 4 will host its Students of the Year Honors Award Banquet at 11:15 a.m.

Career center offers GED prep

The Apollo Career Center is offering GED pretests and free prep classes.

Pretests will be available for $1 through Feb. 28. For those who qualify, the free prep class will begin Feb. 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Elementary school visit rescheduled

Rescheduled because of bad weather, Professor Maria Ignatievawill from Ohio State-Lima will visit second-grade teacher, Amanda William’s classroom from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at Liberty Elementary School.

Specialist visits Lima Schools

Bill Chalmers, a leading authority on child homicide or mass murder, will visit Lima City Schools on Thursday. The district will host hour-long assemblies for its students throughout the day beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Two students from Upper Scioto Valley High School had their work honored at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Laura Bentley, a senior, earned a silver key for her colored pencil drawing “Siblings by Blood, Friends by Choice,” and Crystal Brown, a junior, received a gold key for her scratch board “Whoo?”.
