UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio (AP) — Republican Sen. Rob Portman is calling Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) the most effective surrogate he has for beating Democratic former Gov. Ted Strickland.
Portman praised Kasich's record and popularity during a joint campaign appearance Thursday. He made no mention of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, whom Kasich has refused to endorse.
Ohio Democratic Chairman David Pepper said Kasich showed political courage with his stand against Trump, while Portman has endorsed him. Pepper says the joint appearance showed the stark contrast.
After the event, Portman said he supports the party's nominee but is running an independent campaign.
He says he hasn't hesitated to speak out against Trump at times, but he believes a Republican president can do more than a Democratic one at helping advance the GOP's agenda in Washington.
