Flood control efforts along Blanchard River progressing

OTTAWA, Ohio (AP) — Officials say efforts to reduce flooding risks and hazards around a village in northwest Ohio are moving forward.

An embankment has been lowered about six feet along the Blanchard River near the village of Ottawa.

The Maumee Watershed Conservancy District also said this past week that changes have been finished on a bridge and should help prevent flooding.

Controlling flooding along the Blanchard has become a priority following several floods caused millions of dollars in damage over the past decade.

The Lima News reports (http://bit.ly/2aQjunx ) district officials say they must now establish a diversion channel along the lower Blanchard River.

Construction is planned in the spring.

The district is currently in land rights negotiations.

The village of Ottawa will have to buy flood-prone properties and remove them.
