TOLEDO — Marion Local’s boys basketball season came to an end Saturday night with a 48-24 Division III regional final loss to Archbold at the University of Toledo’s John F. Savage Arena.
The Flyers (18-9) trailed 11-7 at the end of the first quarter but were then held to three points in each of the second and third periods.
Nathan Bruns led Marion Local with nine points and teammate Tyler Mescher scored five. Bruns also had 12 rebounds and Mescher had five boards. The Flyers’ Matt Rethman had three assists. Archbold won the rebound battle 35-25 and committed 13 turnovers to Marion Local’s 14. Archbold connected on 12 of 34 field goal attempts and 19 of 25 free throw efforts. The Flyers were of 8 of 39 on field goal tries and made 6 of 15 on free throw attempts.
Archbold (22-5) will play Roger Bacon, a 70-64 winner against Summit Country Day, in a state semifinal at 2 p.m. Friday at Value Center Arena in Columbus.
ONU duo honored
ADA — Ohio Northern’s Britt Lauck, a Shawnee graduate, and Amy Bullimore were named All-America for 2016-17 by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Lauck was a First Team WBCA All-American and Bullimore was named to the Honorable Mention All-America team.

ONU 19, Thomas More
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — Caleb Thomas smashed a 3-run home run to lead Ohio Northern at Thomas More Field.
The Polar Bears improved to 7-4 and the Saints fell to 4-2.
Thomas finished the day 3-for-3 with 5 RBI and four runs scored and Brandon Kasberg was 3-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored.
ONU 22, Houghton 4
HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Max Weese scored a school record eight goals to lead Ohio Northern at Burke Field.
The Polar Bears improved to 3-3, while the Highlanders fell to 0-6.
Weese also had an assist and finished with a school record nine points.
Men’s track & field
NEW CONCORD — Ohio Northern opened its 2017 outdoor season with a 6-1 record at McConagha Stadium.
Conner Karg led the Polar Bears with wins in the 200 dash in 22.69 seconds and the 400 dash in 49.54.
Ursuline 19, ONU 7
ADA — Katie McCourt and Rachel Shipman scored two goals each to lead Ohio Northern at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears fell to 1-4, while the Arrows improved to 2-3.
Women’s track & field
NEW CONCORD — Ohio Northern opened its 2017 outdoor season by posting a 7-0 record at McConagha Stadium .
The Polar Bears were led by Taylor Lavey, who won the 100 dash in :13.38 and the long jump with a leap of 4.89 meters.
