Bluffton falls short against Defiance in football

BLUFFTON — A fourth-quarter rally by the host Beavers fell short as Defiance College won Saturday’s Battle for the Hammer 28-20.

Bluffton trailed 28-7 with 14:55 remaining in the game and then scored on a pair of 2-yard throws by Connor Sheehan to Lucas Espitia and Ada graduate Micah Roberson respectively.

The Beavers could get no closer, finishing their season at 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Defiance improved to 5-5 and 4-4 in the HCAC.

Sheehan finished with three TD throws with the first going to Raphael Dell from 11-yards out. Sheehan completed 33 of 52 pass attempts for 301 yards and was picked off four times. He also was the Beavers’ leading rusher with 41 yards on 11 carries.

Roberson had 16 receptions for 121 yards. Stanley Williams had nine solo and one assisted tackle, Crestview grad Jake Harmon had six solo and two assisted tackles and Tyrone White and Kobe Russell each had an interception for Bluffton.
