Joe Blundo: Enough for everyone

All that stands between me and a perfect garden are chemical weapons and a defensible perimeter. But I don’t think it’s worth declaring war on nature to grow a few tomatoes. So my midsummer garden report shows typically mixed results: prolific green-bean production but dismal pepper returns. Also, I unwittingly planted a metaphor for current events. The Russian kale, which I hadn’t grown before, is exhibiting the aggressive nature of Vladimir Putin. It has grown huge and begun threatening its neighbor, the Swiss chard. That’s right: I have an international incident developing in the garden.Still, I have to count the kale as a success because I don’t have many others to brag about.

That’s not so good for farmers, but consumers should benefit.Per-bushel corn prices have dropped 38 percent since last July, John Miyares, a statistician with the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Great Lakes Regional Field Office, t...

Lori Borgman: Tax false fitness claims - feel the burn

When the strong-arming began to tax gym memberships and exercise classes in D.C. (as is already done in many states), opponents to the tax turned out to protest by striking yoga poses in public spaces — the warrior pose, the mountain pose, assorted poses with arms, hips and torsos thrust at interesting angles. The protest was so much more original than the usual placard-carrying protests that I immediately raised my free weights in support.“Power to the posers!” I...

Tell Me About It: Breathing new life into old stuff

1. How did you get into upcycling?Well, let’s see. It started when my daughter was a teenager. She has these jeans she really liked, but they got too small, so we turned them into a skirt. We did this before it was the style. Recently, it’s been harder to find modest skirts, so I find a pair of shorts I can make into a longer and fuller skirt.2. Can you explain what upcycling is exactly? It’s where you use an item for a new purpose. It’s...

Lawmakers should limit free travel, not hide it

July 25 — Just because something’s legal doesn’t mean it’s right, no matter what the House Ethics Committee says. This is the same committee, after all, that tried earlier this month to make it more difficult for citizens to find out which lawmakers are accepting freebies for themselves, their families and staffs; how often; and the identity of the private organizations or foreign governments picking up the tab.The moral watchdogs quietly did away ...

Caroline Little: The technology that will stimulate journalism’s future is now here

To say technology has changed the newspaper media industry is understating the obvious. While much discussion focuses on how we read the news, technology is changing the way we report the news. The image of a reporter showing up to a scene with a pen and a pad is iconic but lost to the vestiges of time.I am asked frequently about the future of newspapers and, in particular, what does a successful future look like. For journalists, to be successful is to command multiple t...
