SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — When Kristin Gable was named the new Shawnee High School swim coach; she knew what she was getting into. Gable inherits a team that has won 26 consecutive Western Buckeye League championships and competes for state championships year in and year out.

The Indians return three boys who made it to state last year. Britton Weigt was a state qualifier in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay. Weigt was joined in the 200 freestyle relay last year at state with Jon Andrews and Joey Ellis who both return. Noah Curl was an alternate for the relay and also made the trip to C.T. Branin Natatorium at Canton McKinely High School.

“We only lost two boys from last year,” Gable said. “I’d like to see more boys qualify individually for state this year.”

The Shawnee girls will be led once again by Emily Murphy. The senior signed her letter of intent to swim at the University of Pittsburgh and has finished in second place at state the last two years.

“Emily is a silent leader who isn’t big on getting in faces,” Gable said. “She’s a leader by dedicating herself in practice. She shows up and works hard. She’s willing to do whatever you need her to do and doesn’t complain. She’s a great asset to the team.”

The girls will have to replace a strong swimmer in Katie Chung, who is unable to swim because of medical reasons.

“We lost some strong contributors so our main goal is to win the WBL,” Gable said. “We’re hoping Maddy Cohorn and Emma Rao fill in Katie’s spot.”

Gable coached at the Lima YMCA the last for years. She was very excited to get the Shawnee job since she is so familiar with the kids.

“It’s pretty nice because I knew their strengths and weaknesses,” Gable said. “I’m really pleased with the kids, especially the freshmen and sophomores. They’ve been working hard and I’m happy with their effort and dedication. I know my juniors and seniors will provide the effort but I’m very pleased with the younger kids because they’ll be the ones to carry the program on in the future.”
