ST. MARYS – Roger Bowersock is calling the inaugural Grand Lake Marathon a “marathon like few others.”

The marathon is Sept. 27. There also will be a half marathon, 10K and 5K events. The courses will use city streets, state routes and county roads on the shores of Grand Lake.

“The scenic loop is not only along the lake shore with beautiful water views, but a portion of the course will also take you by family farms and through the rural countryside,” said Bowersock, the president of Rocketship Sports Management and the race organizer.

Bowersock grew up in St. Marys. He said when he used to ride his bike around the lake, he knew the distance and the beautiful scenery made it a natural choice for a marathon. He said this is a chance for runners to “escape the concrete jungle and run in the country.”

Half Marathon participants will enjoy a tour of the north shore of Grand Lake St. Marys, with a finish in St. Marys.

The course is USATF certified for Boston qualification. Miles will be marked and half distance splits will be provided. Aid stations will be available approximately every 2 miles serving water and other performance fuels. All finishers in the full and half marathon receive a commemorative medal at the finish.

Runners can register at www.GrandLakeMarathon.com.

People wishing to volunteer to work on race day can contact the Auglaize & Mercer Counties Visitors Bureau at SeeMore@bright.net or call 1-800-860-4726 for more details.
