LIMA — More than a month in advance of Pickle’s Blues Extravaganza, members of the community will have the opportunity to enjoy some free blues music at the Allen County Museum.
Reed Turchi, lead guitarist and vocalist for the Ashville, N.C., blues group Turchi, will perform a free concert on a cigar box guitar starting at 7 p.m.
“It’s always a good time holding these concerts,” James “Pickle” Felter said. “We can pack a lot of people in there for these concerts.”
This concert is part of an initiative with Liberty Arts Magnet School and St. Gerard Elementary School to introduce future generations to the blues music genre. In December, eighth-grade students at Liberty Arts Magnet School built their own cigar box guitars, and Turchi will be working with those students throughout the week, teaching them how to play. He will also work with fifth-grade students at St. Gerard.
“We just want to get the students interested in music,” Felter said. “There are all those studies out there showing that students involved in music programs are likely to get better grades and go off to better colleges.”
The public will also have the opportunity to meet Turchi during Wednesday’s concert.
