LIMA — A former marketing professional who started a new business with a family recipe is this year’s keynote speaker at the 2014 Community Enrichment Dinner.

Amy Hilliard, a native Detroiter, is the founder and CEO of The ComfortCake Co., based in Chicago. She owns The Hilliard Group, a strategic marketing consulting, product development and speaking firm. Hilliard is also a recognized social activist in the Chicago community and established the HUGS Foundation in 2009 to further develop the entrepreneurial spirit in others through mentorship and scholarship programs.

“She had done a lot of work with major corporations launching their brands, and she decided she wanted to take the launch herself,” Walter C. Potts Entrepreneur Center Executive Director Jesse Pope said. “She decided it was a passion she wanted the follow. Our center is about entrepreneurs and we love to hear stories about new businesses and we know it’s important for people to see others who have done that.”

The dinner is at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Veterans Memorial Civic Center. Tickets are $60, and can be purchased at the Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce or by calling 419-222-6045. The eighth annual dinner benefits the Walter C. Potts Entrepreneur Center. More information about the center can be found at http://pottsentrepreneurcenter.com.

Launched in 2001, ComfortCake is distributed nationally through foodservice and retail channels and through the company website. In addition to the signature southern-style pound cake developed from a family recipe, the company also produce a proprietary sugar substitute for baking, as well as other baked goods, cake mixes and whole grain pizzas and crusts.

Hilliard was an honors graduate of both Howard University and the Harvard Business School. She is the author of “Tap Into Your Juice — Find Your Gifts, Lose Your Fears and Build Your Dreams.”
