OTTAWA — Firefighters, police and sheriff deputes in Putnam County squared off in a spaghetti dinner eating contest Thursday night, all part of a fundraiser for the American Red Cross of Putnam County.
It was the first year for the eating contest and the second year for the food fundraiser. They raised $1,360 for Red Cross programs that include first aid classes, blood services, services to the armed forces and disaster services, said Director Michelle Williams.
Hirzel Canning of Ottawa donated the spaghetti sauce and Beckman Jewelers donated the plaque for the eating contest winner, she said.
The contest and fundraiser was held at Henry’s restaurant in Ottawa.
Williams wants to have an eating contest every year but change up the food. Next year she may try to have a chicken wing eating contest, she said.
Williams came up with the idea for the eating contest after watching such contests on television.
Next year, she said they may open the eating contest to anyone who buys a ticket.
