ADA — Dan Cardwell, 62, was just a young man when he began working at City Tool and Die in Lima.

He was only 23 then. Now, many years later, he has a wife, four grown children, six grandchildren, and he is finishing up what he started.

“I was intrigued at the opportunity to build dies that make metal stampings,” Cardwell said. “I thought that this would be a challenge and something that I would enjoy doing.”

Cardwell, who lives in Lima with his wife, stayed with the company as it went through numerous changes.

In 1992, the company moved to Ada. In 1996, the business sold to Universal Engineering. In 2002, the business sold again to North American Stamping Group.

NASG Ohio LLC is now one of eight divisions of the company across North America. The company focuses on stamping in several different areas, including exhaust components, ride control, NVH components, seating components, structural chassis parts, weldments, hinges and brake components.

“I started out in the tool room, and I have worked my way up to tool room supervisor,” Cardwell said. “Over the years I have had the opportunity working on and building dies that make parts for the automotive, trucking, appliance and military industries.”

As he nears retirement, Cardwell expressed being very happy with his career choice and said he wouldn't change a thing.

“Over the years we have had our ups and downs,” Cardwell said, “but it has been a fun ride. I look forward to the future opportunities as we grow as a business in Ada.”
