DELPHOS — Police recovered a sawed-off shotgun they believe a Delphos man used to kill his wife before turning himself in to authorities Thursday. Bond was set at $1 million Friday in the case.
Patrick D. Coller, 43, has been charged with murder with a firearms specification, Allen County Sheriff Samuel Crish said. He’s accused of killing his wife, 42-year-old Gerri L. Coller, in a corn field off Jones Road.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Office recovered what it believed to be the murder weapon. Deputies found a shotgun with a sawed-off barrel. It appeared someone attempted to remove its serial number. Crish said in a news release there were no reports of the gun being stolen, but they believe the shotgun was stolen previously by Patrick Coller.
Gerri Coller worked at Vancrest Health Care Center in Delphos, according to her Facebook profile. The Delphos Jefferson graduate also studied at Rhodes State College. She listed her relationship status as separated, and she hadn’t made a public Facebook update since Aug. 8 after making frequent updates the week prior. A different Facebook account said she lived in Ashland, Kentucky, for a time.
The two had a son together on Oct. 1, 2012, according to archives of The Lima News. Funeral arrangements are pending at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, where a visitation is scheduled for after 2 p.m. Monday.
Patrick Coller went to the Delphos Police Department about 6 p.m. on Thursday and told officers he shot his wife earlier in the day, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. Police went with Coller to the corn field where he said he killed his wife. They found her dead with an apparent gunshot wound.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Office joined Delphos police at the scene and took Coller to the Allen County Jail, where they questioned him.
Patrick Coller was arraigned at 2 p.m. Friday in Lima Municipal Court, where a judge set the $1 million bond. His only other criminal case recorded in Allen County’s municipal or common pleas court websites was a speeding ticket.
