A winning season won’t define success for this year’s Dukes volleyball team.

Coach Nicole Scott said her goal for the 22 varsity and junior varsity girls revolves around the effort they put in.

“You can lose and still be successful,” she said.

Last year the Lady Dukes won only a single game. Scott said she wants to turn that around but still emphasize the importance of having fun.

The new head coach said the 2013 season stats don’t matter as long as the girls focus on the future.

She said teenage girls try too hard to be perfect.

“Volleyball is just not perfect, there’s a lot of variables,” she said.

To control some of those variables, Scott is focusing on new techniques including a faster offense.

The girls also learned a new defensive strategy last week. Scott said she’s proud of how quickly the teams are picking up the changes.

They’ll show off their newly acquired skills in the season opener Aug. 26 at Lutheran West.
